Policy Best Practices

Blue Coat Policy is a powerful tool that allows administrators to create and apply flexible policies in their network. This flexibility, and the ability to create almost limitless rule combinations, is possible because of the extensive set of available conditions, properties, and actions. With many administrators becoming more familiar with policy (CPL and VPM), and many even choosing to create CPL-based policies instead of VPM-based policies, it is no surprise that administrators often want to know the best way to achieve a particular policy or set of policies.

The purpose of the following document is to provide recommended practices in three key areas:

-> Policy constuct
-> Policy integrity
-> Policy optimization

How to Identify ProxySG in Your Logs using a policy

Learn how to create a ProxySG data profile and corresponding Reporter filter to view log data on a per-proxy basis.

Blue Coat Reporter offers a useful tool for aggregating and processing logs from either a single ProxySG appliance or multiple ProxySG appliances. If you have more than one Blue Coat Proxy SG and want to view logs per appliance,
one solution is to inject naming data into the logs using the Group policy field. Each ProxySG can be configured with a policy that simply adds a given name to the Group data field. Once the policy is created and installed, a filter in
Reporter is used to view reports based on the Group data field. In that way, you can view any report for any proxy rather than a report showing the combined data of all your proxies.

NOTE: If you are already using the Group field for other purposes, this solution does not apply; often the Group field is not used.

This document assumes that you have a working knowledge of Blue Coat Systems ProxySG and Reporter configuration techniques, a working system with more than one proxy configured to upload data to a single folder, and a Reporter configured with a data profile to read all its logs from that folder.
